Sport Climbing is the fastest growing adventure sport in India. It is an official sport in the Asian Games and is an official sport in Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games and in 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Children are natural climbers and unlike many other sports, no one is singled out in any climbing activity. Success is measured and controlled by setting attainable goals. Climbers are challenged only by themselves and the obstacles before them. Lionel Terray, one of the most renowned climbers of this century, is right when he said that it is the climber who best understands value of life. It is not just a question of developing a couple of motor skills, although that happens naturally as well. Climbing develops one's inner strength, leading one at the same time to a fuller understanding of how one should relate to others and the society at large. Here is a summary of individual , team and collective skills inherent to climbing.
Individual Skills: Visual perception, lateral movement, spatial perception, coordination, muscular strength, emotional control(fear), commitment (calculated risks), taking responsibility for safety, problem solving, observation, analysis, self confidence, concentration and creativity.
Team Skills: Keeping watch on one's teammate, acting as an advisor, providing motivation, offering encouragement and having confidence in others.
Collective Skills: Co-operating with others and ensuring their safety. Climbing wall activities provide excellent educational opportunities for students with special needs. The term 'special needs' as used here includes students who are Emotionally Challenged, Aggressive / assertive / angry, Disruptive / defiant / uncooperative, Disordered in their conduct, Withdrawn / passive, Excessively self conscious / anxious, Paranoid / fearful, Attention deficit, Academically challenged.
